Some i550 Videos

I have often wanted thought it might be nice to have a collection of i550 video links, rather than searching every time, so I went looking. I did not include many videos of boats being turned over, or bulbs being poured. There are more to be had, but I pass the torch. Nice job Warren, there is one more that was overlooked on youtube. The i550 flip in Tasmania. Not sure how to display link.

Marino, I have edited my original post to add the Tasmanian flip ..... (It is straightforward to capture the link, play the video and copy the URL that is displayed during the video, and then paste it wherever you want. I made a WORD doc first and then copied the whole thing into the forum. Extracting embedded videos from Facebook is another mystery entirely!)

Thanks Warren for the advice. What stage of built are you? Any pictures?

Mostly thinking. I have a bulb pattern at a boatbuilder for casting and my mast, boom and sprit are ordered. I am doing some of the expensive stuff up front to avoid later paralysis. My hull build won't start until next winter. My build log (what little there is of it) is in the forum. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=364

How are things going with the build? Hopefully well. I bought a lot of stuff when I found it at a discount even if I didn't need it at the time for the build. I would like to see pics of your progress.

Not much visible progress. As I said in my build log, autumn was my get-ready-for-iceboating season and in the first week of December I drove to Lake Christina, MN for the first DN regatta of the year, aptly named the Great Western Challenge. It was a long trip (Fargo ND was 60 miles further) but the sailing was good. Third in silver fleet, but more satisfying were two top tens in the combined gold/silver scrub racing fleet. (KC 3786 is me in the picture: iceboats are not ISAF/World sailing affiliated, so we never made the conversion to the television oriented three-letter country codes for sail numbers)

No build progress photos because any progress is remote at the moment. I had a call from the foundryman a couple of weeks ago: he was getting to my bulb and had a couple of questions, like "Did you include a shrinkage allowance in your pattern?" I said "No, but it won't matter in this application ...." So I should see a bulb one of these days - probably later rather than sooner. On the rig side we have selected prod and boom designs from available tooling and mast tooling is under construction at Fast Composites (aka Phil's Foils). The plan is for February delivery of mast, boom and prod so I can pick them up in Ottawa while returning from the DN North American championships. With the Canadian dollar sliding I am happy to have chosen a Canadian source.

I have some iceboat-related composite stuff to do (a new CF tiller) and will likely use that as an opportunity to start working on the i550 foils.

Good to hear the pieces are coming together. I worked with fast composites, they did both my rudder/cassette and strut. Great guys and quality work.

Love the ice boat stuff, always wanted to try it. In the past I've thought about building a experimental one using sunfish rigging just to run around some of our smaller lakes that freeze over well. Thanks for the DN pic, got me thinking about it again.

If you are contemplating a Sunfish-based iceboat have a look at plans for 'Cheapskate' on the Chickawaulkie Ice Boat Club website: http://iceboat.me/cheapskate/ I have seen Cheapskate in the flesh and it is both easy and quick to build and a remarkably effective recreational iceboat. If racing is not your bag on the ice then there is no need to go the expensive route. DN's are now rather high-tech, with 2 to 3 thousand dollar composite masts and $600 (each!) runners. Cheapskate is anything but that! And cheapskate is small enough to be no embarrassment when it needs to be stored in warm (or snowy) weather.

Thanks Warren! Nice to follow what someone else has done and not try to reinvent it. I didn't know this was available. Very likely my next project.

Our local lake thoroughly froze last year for the first time since I've been here, causing me to go looking for ice boat ideas. I thought about a strap-on set of runners for the El Toro, and I looked at the cheapskate plans, but ended up having no time for either.

50's forecast for Christmas, it's going to be a warm or late winter here.
