Since I don't have a blog and others might be the same. Just finished sanding the clear coat to 1500 and a small bit of buffing. Back flip set for Saturday afternoon On to Finishing the topsides and getting thngs rigged, exciting times!

Sorry to ask, and therefore admit in front of you all how İGNORANT i am, but what is this clear coat you applied on top of paint ????

So there is float coat, fairing coat, prime coats (many) , paint coats (as many) and now clear coat ???? And then there is sanding in between all of these zillions coats ????You guys want to kill me or what ?!

Looking really nice Jon.

Jerome, I think Jon added a clear coat because of the stripes in his paint job design. If you go with one color it's certainly not needed.

Kevin is correct about the clear coat over the stripes. The clear is made by the same company as the color coats, System 3.

Jerome, float coats (Yes) fairing coats X lots (YES) Primer coats (Yes) color and clear coats sanding between each step, sorry! The paint I used is different stuff, very low VOC. It didn't roll and tip well so it cost me some product and labor before I figured out that spraying coats was the way to go. We'll see how well it holds up. I finished up by sanding 600, 1000 and 1500 grit.

All the fine sanding was due to the product I used and my poor application techniques and not needed with most other products out there.

So you had your top deck painted before the hull or did you just paint the top after flipping the boat in record time ?

By the way, İ intend to do somewhat of a complicated paint lay out. Do you believe İ also need to apply a clear coat on top of all that paint ???

The top is just primer, done before flipping and working the bottom. I'm rethinking what I planned for the top. Sometimes less is more visually. Don't know what to recommend on your clear coat question. I used it to help make everything level out with the stripes. When you mask and paint one color over another you will end up with a ridge, less if spraying and probably more if rolling and tipping. You might be able to re-mask after everything has set and add a pass on your base coat to lift it to match. Anyway you go you might have to sand and buff to the finish your looking for.

Jerome have fun with it, I told myself it's just paint. It can be sanded off or covered over if your plans don't work. This is easy compared to building the boat and you've already done that

When you mask and paint one color over another you will end up with a ridge, less if spraying and probably more if rolling and tipping.

with most paints, you can pull the tape soon after the paint is applied, and the edge will lay down without a ridge. There is still a very small additional thickness involved, but not the meniscus that is caused by leaving the tape on. Best to try a sample first, to get a feel for the right timing, and make sure your accent paint can be applied in one coat, and with no drips.

Looks good Tim! The fibers aren't everywhere, just in strategic go fast areas looks like things are progressing now you have better whether. Build On!

Building of MIST is delayed. I'm desperate for space to finish other commitments so in the overhead of the garage is where the boat goes. I'm looking forward to getting back to work on it.

Whatever you do, don't take the build outside. The planet is pissed off and throws whatever it can at i550 building projects...for some reason it has a particular dislike for our little boats.

Busy weekend, finaly got part to the topside done. All that is left is the white, plannning on taking advantage of the long weekend comming up. Water is comming up in the lake, should be full pool mid June.

Jon,

a new surprise with every new post. The guys have said it already but, man, does your boat look nice....! The cabin top is gorgeous. How did you round it off like that ? Foam ? Strip plankıng ?

Striped the top of the cabin on a bias using 1/8" ply. Fairing and glassing between layers. The sides are 1/4" ply as per the plans, because I could radius the top into the sides it gives the illusion that the hole top is rounded. Plus is the top is super strong, down side is the extra weight from the process. I figured the extra weight at about 10lbs.

Getting closer to launch day! (Which is not set) As things are getting closer I'm finding a list of 1000 little jobs. 15 minutes here, 10 there and two hours on something else. I'm not a multi task person, it's amazing how much is left to do after the boat is built! Still trudging on.
