How much epoxy/filler did you use?

Postby slowpoke » Mon Apr 22, 2013 1:38 pm

Could you guys that have already finished your hulls give us a real number for gallons of epoxy used/ pounds of filler? That old number of 6 gallons of epoxy went out the window 2 months ago, and I'm starting to feel like I'm doing something wrong!

Think this pretty much sums it up, for me (there is a gallon on top of the boat that is in progress)

I count seven gallons plus the hardener? How many cans of hardener make a gallon?

Rocky,

I used more than 10 gallons of epoxy for the boat. I bought 15 (I bought 5 gal at a time) but I had some other projects and I still have a little left. I don't recall how much filler I used.

I think I'm on gallon 14 or 15. I should have just bought a 2nd 5 gallon size container. But I was "almost done" when the first one ran out. I should have just bought the 10 pound bag of aerosil. And similar qty of filler/ballons. But that's something you are always playing with the mix depending on what you are doing, so it's pretty hard to judge.

I can conclude my my epoxy resin usage, now that I am left with a rudder cassette, keel-to-bulb assembly, deck-fittings, and a wooden mast to build.
Low-viscosity epoxy resin = 6 gallons
Thixotropic (paste-type) epoxy resin = 7 gallons
Micro glass bubbles filler = 8 oz

I am left with about 3/4 gallon of low-viscosity resin, 1/2 gallon of thixotropic resin.

I am at 10 gal or so and still have a good chunk of work left to do. I also built some other parts for other boats.
