Can anyone remember where the picture is of the home-made sheave for the outhaul for someone's boom? I'm having to do the same thing, and his picture would help. Also any descriptions of how he did it, and how does it work?

...done when the rules said the boom had to be 108" max, so it was really important to get the outhaul sheave (and nothing else) all the way at the end.

Now, it's a lot easier just to plunck in a through deck fitting like Harken's 302:

I'm personally a fan of these Holt sheaves and exit boxes for $15 to $20:



I like the stainless steel strap on the back of the 38MM ones which keeps the line on the pulley. Also, You only need one rivet.

One thing to consider is making your initial outhaul purchase to be a 2:1. You just need something to attach the end of your line too after going through the grommet in the main sale. The longer boom allows for a thru deck and anything over 25mm is just added weight.

Looks like my boom is sitting at 112 inches if I include the goose neck. I think one of the smaller Holt sheaves at the end of the boom might be best?

yup, 112 is plenty long. Any through deck sheave will work swell, try to put the aft face a couple inches past the 107" point, and then use a strop (or lashing or webbing loop or reinforced velcro strap) to hold the clew to the boom. You want the outhaul to pull (mostly) aft and not downward, so make the strop tight enough that the clew doesn't raise much from the top of the boom.

It's amazing how much you forget in a short time. I went out to look at the end of my boon and saw that I did use the 25mm sheave there. Also, because I was mounting on top of a track, I used a small stainless steel machine screw and washer/nut, rather than a rivet there. Here is a photo:

Also, I used a 4 to 1 purchase on the outhaul.

My outhaul total purchase is 6:1. 2:1 primary and then a 3:1 secondary inside the boom using lashed ti-lite blocks.

A second on Chad's idea for a strap around the boom in the main sail clew grommet. The coolest setup would be to have a webbing strap that just goes over the end of the boom. This assumes that your main sheet attaches far enough forward to not interfere with the main sail clue at maximum ease. I'd only used a velcro strap if the purchase was outboard of the outhaul. But since most are using travelers that shouldn't be a problem.

The Olsen 30 i race on uses a velcro strap through the clew grommet, it works great, slides easily along the boom

we have one on the Omega 36 that I race on, too. Works great. Quantum gave it to us.
