PHRF Handicaps

Postby jeff.dalsin » Sun Apr 03, 2011 2:49 am

Hey all-

You will be interested to know that I got my 2011 certificate today and the rating has moved up to 147 (from 120). Looks like Lake Michigan PHRF is starting to understand these sportboat thingies a little better.

Sadly, I cannot seem to attach a PDF. But this might get you there: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0Bw098ClVMVICNmU1NTQ2ZDYtZGJiMy00MjAzLWI5NTAtYjdiMGRlZmM4NWE3&hl=en

Thanks Jeff, I just got the paperwork together to sumbit here. I wasn't able to get through on the link but having your boat rated is bound to help others out. The 147 is not near as bad as 120. ;)

Nice news. Much closer to the 148 that the open 5.70 has. I think the boats are very similar. Would be very interesting to sail against one some day to see how we do.

Cheers, Kevin.

Looks like your ISP is incorrect.
Attached (if this works) is some rating info I've been collecting, just out of curiousity...

Thanks for the good eyes, Chad. The application had the correct ISP number, as did last year's cert. Looks like a data entry error at LMPHRF. Will have to contact them to correct it.

Congrats, hope I can follow suit soon w/ a move from 120 to something more realistic.

What about a portsmouth #......I didn't see any actual # suggested in the other forums.

Racing this weekend and the RC is asking for a number, any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've never raced portsmouth, but here's what I come up with:
Rough conversion formulas:

PHRF = 6 * DPN - 330

or

(Phrf +330)/6 = DPN

So with Norcal's PH of 120, that's a DPN of 75

With Jeff's PH of 147, that's a DPN of 79.5

Some example ratings of actual boats close in rating to an i550(the PH is So Cal):

Star = 83.1, PH = 144

Etchells = 78.6, PH = 117

U20 = 79.9, PH = 138

J30 = 76.9, PH = 138

J80 = 74, PH = 120

Santa Cruz 27 = 81.6, PH = 138

With all that, I think somewhere between 79 and 82 would be fair. The U20 is the most direct comparable boat, and has better all around numbers than an i550, so you should rate just a bit slower, say 80.5 to arbitrarily pick a number.

Great. It's nice to see some consistency coming out of this craziness. 150 is do-able...120? probably not so much. Thanks for the info!

I was looking over at the facebook i550 site and saw that Paul got a phrf rating of 135 from the san diego phrf committee. It'll be interesting to see how he does :D
