frame 53.5

I don't know if this has been asked already, but is there an issue with frame 53.5 not fitting properly into the hull.

........a huge factor is the method of stitch'n'glue on the floor,,,rather than on a proper frame,leaves MUCH space for variables to creep-in!...most builds accomplish stitching the panels together,,then real life takes over and the panel-boat flattens out with time and moisture until the bulkheads are forced into this mulched shape!
........imagine building the skin over the solid frame,,rather than the other way 'round!!

He's got pics on FB micah, and that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I'd (obviously) check the hull panel dimensions, make sure the corners joined approximately corner to corner without slipping past each other, check the bottom is fair (the hull bottom has very little curvature between f18 and f89, so it's easy to warp into a wavy or lumpy shape), then check your frame size again. If all good (it probably is), then just get the sheer the right distance apart and then make the frame fit.

I found that the frames held the deck about 1/4" above the hull sides through the entire middle of the boat. So the hull sides didn't quite reach the frame corners at the top. The frame curves were added to the plan, but the hull side shape has never been adjusted to account for this. I think this gap is the result, but it's a pretty minor issue if you have a sheer clamp and just plane it to a fair curve hitting the frame tops, then fill the little 1/4" x 1/4" gap above the hull panel. Then radius the edge and most of the gap gets cut away, anyway.

Can't wait to see micah's upside down jig-built hull when he's done!

Marino, I think you may be having the same problem I ran into. I tried to load a photo of my problem but it is too big. Check out the second photo of my Jan 18, 2011 post "I Should Have Known" in blog mistnotmissed.blogspot.com. I simply added material between the frame and the hull sides. I attempted to pull the hull sides into the 'planned' size of frame 53.5 but it caused humps and shallows elsewhere in the hull. Hope this helps. -Tim K

I did the same. It was easier to adjust the frames than to try to torture the hull panels. Chad created cad drawings for frames with curved sides that would avoid some of this.

I ended up doing the same as Phil. I added an half inch on each side of the frame, then shaped the curve to suit the hull panel shape. The original problem was that where the hull panel meet the frame a bulge was formed when tie wrapping the hull panel to the frame at the lower end(wish I took a picture).

Late to reply, but don't pull them tight is the right answer. Sister in a strip and then fillet and tape both sides. Check my fairing blog pictures if you want to see what happens when up pull it tight at frame 53.

Craig "poozle trap" told me to cut the frame apx 5/8" big, although I did not ask if he built his in a cradle, did the PDX guys have this problem?.

I believe most all of the first builds including mine tightened the hull panels up to 53.5 and had extra work fairing in the end. I built on a cradle and it didn't solve this problem though I still recommend building on one for other reasons. Unknown if the PDX guys had the same issue but would bet they did. If I had the chance to do it over again I would make the frame fit the hull and not the other way around.
