micah202, though the boat looks really good black I won't be keeping it this color. From what I understand, the fairing compound that I used West 410 microlight cannot hold up to high temperatures. The bright sun and high temps experienced in Virginia are surely enough to overdo the microlight's capabilities. I applied three coats of epoxy with graphite powder to seal the fairing compound and help hide the pencil marks form the fairing process. I sure wish I had the dough for one of them C-tech rigs and carbon sails though. They're a little too high for me.

I've been making progress on the rudder too! White cedar blank, 10" chord, 60" long, bottom third is tapered. I hope to be vacuum bagging it this weekend and then going to work on the cassette. Can you tell I'm tired of sanding?

Hard to tell, but are you using a more aggressive NACA shape than 0012? These look thinner through the widest sections and draft aft of my 0012s.

I selected aa thin section for the blank. Once the carbon is added there will be additional thickness. I planto fair the foil to a NACA 63 series. We'll see how that goes??

For durability I added a 1/16" thick, strip of g10 to the trailing edge. Hopefully this will help to not ding the trailing edge. Also, I routed a shallow groove, 3" wide, the length the rudder, at max thickness, to accommodate the unidirectional carbon.

My first try at a substantial vacuum bagging evolution. Five layers of carbon total. The groove I routed wasn't quite deep enough, so I'll need to fair that out. Always something to overcome. But, I'm thrilled with the results.

The bottom is glassed, and I've started my final fairing, just layed down a pound of fairing compound. Pictures will follow in the next day or two.

The groove I routed wasn't quite deep enough, so I'll need to fair that out. Always something to overcome.

....20/20 hindsight,,but a test layup and a pair of calipers would help here

Funny thing is I did measure the tape thikness. Where I had trouble was routing the slot over the curvature of the rudder. Good thing is, I don't think my original foil design will change. The actual cord turned out alittle longer so ill add fairing compound on the sides to bring the foil shape back to my plan. Forgive me, I don't remember the shape I choose. I need to go look that up.

Got my chainplaates cut out and drilled today, ready to go in when I turn her back over. Another small step for mankind!

I finally scraped together enough cash to order another couple pounds of phenolic microballoons, so I can finally finish fairing the bottom. It's been really frustrating, I just don't understand why my family needs clothes and food!

Well, I am back at and have progressed at turtles pace. A thing called work has been interfering with the boat buildup. I am an licensed electrician and also do small jobs after work hours. Doesn't give me much time for pleasure.

I am a Building Contractor so I can relate to being too busy,,,, I am still moving forward but it's more by force of will. Just keep the momentum going 1/2 hour of work is 1/2 hour less at the end.

Me too!! Wow, what a productive day. Made huge progress on my mass of lumpy lead, adding fairing pox and turning it into something that actually is beginning to look like a bulb. Still has a way to go, but I think I see the light at the end of this particular tunnel.

Hull 437 moving off to the trailer maker shop.
Unfortunately the trailer bunks did not match properly.
So that'll be another week of trailer rectification.

The next step will be fabricating the shrouds.
