Chine radius

Postby i550sailor@aol.com » Wed Jul 09, 2014 3:30 am

I know I have seen this but could not re-find the info. What is the chine radius?,,, also how did you shape it?

Thanks

I created it with a hand plane and a #49 cabinet rasp. I kept the chine with as much radius as possiable, unknown if it was a good move or not. Others have kept the chine fairly sharp aft and more rounded as it goes forward.

The rules say that you can have any radius you want, but that the wood panels have to touch along all edges. Realistically, this means that you can put about a 1" radius near the bow and quite a bit more near the stern where the panels meet at a more oblique angle. As Jon mentioned, most people leave a sharper chine near the stern and round as much as possible near the bow. I just ran a router with a 3/4" radius bit along the edge, and then used a Stanley Surform (one of the best tools made for building an i550) and sand paper to even out the curve.
