Casting the bulb

I still have the keel plug that Chad designed. If anyone out there needs it let me know. Marino in Toronto wanted it but shipping to Canada is high.

Rats, jig's up! ...I did think that bulb's tail (without the wings) looked a bit like the new beav tail, so that's something.

I think another canter did this last year as well, I recall reading about it. The guys that did the swiss T780 ...ah, heck I'll dig it up and here it is... where they compare their (earlier) fin to Gamesa the Imoca 60. Basically, they design the struts on the canters to be as small as possible, and they found that the huge bulbs were oscillating on the end and the fin stopped the oscillation.

Not something most i550-istas need to deal with. Well, except those with way under-spec keel fins!

Different kettle o fish. Bulb oscillation is probably around 1Hz, humm is maybe 1kHz?

Humm is almost always solvable by trailing edge treatment, usually cutting to an assymmetric bevel.

It's foam, pretty light, less than 5# all packaged I recall. USPS says it'll cost about US$55 to ship to Singapore, as long as the package can be kept less than 36" long. The bulb is 34" long or so, so that should be doable.

Lost contact with the metal recycling guy on the island who mentioned he poured bulbs for keel boats here...

Yep, Loh. I am looking into getting the pattern so that a few bulbs can be casted in one go. Have not had time to come around to check up on your build, but can see of the last pix that you are doing good.
Give me a buzz if you need help to flip over the hull, I am sure I cen get a few goys with me that is also into boating.

Really good looking mold, from what is it made?

The male plug was made out of light ply and foam. The mould was made out of a product called hydrocal. I believe manufactured by us gypsum co. It worked well and will be used again for another build here locally. One trick is to heat the mould to get all the moisture out before pouring the lead. That will help keep steam from bubbling through the lead, water and hot lead don't mix well. Pre-heating will also keep your mould from cracking.

Fantastic news. That will give us 2 reasons to come out west . On that topic, my wife pointed out that I could travel to MT without the boat. But a regatta would be more fun with more boats.

At the risk of hijacking this thread more. Steve may be some time finishing, building in a barn with no real heat source. A Regatta isn't necessary for a trip out. We race most every Saturday during the summer months. And if not it is alwase fun spending a day rounding the islands.

Anybody know how to contact Marino, I assume he has the bulb by now and am looking it muscle in on his pour, well at least help and learn. I'm an hour north of Toronto (hull#489)
